Heading off the beaten track – why choose a lesser-known ski resort for your corporate winter event

Most skiers will have heard of resorts such as Courchevel, Verbier, Val d’Isère and St Anton. These are some of the biggest and most well-known ski resorts in the world, often connected into huge ski areas offering hundreds of kilometres of slopes. But do you really need an expansive ski area for your three day corporate winter event when you have one day in the meeting room? Is heading to one of the big and busy ski resorts the right thing for your group? We would argue, maybe not!

There are hundreds of ski resorts across the Alps, many you won’t have heard of, and for a corporate ski weekend or ski event choosing a smaller, lesser-known resort can offer excellent benefits and better value for money for your group.

We look at why you might want to consider a smaller ski resort for your corporate winter event:

  • On-site management

A small ski resort can allow the host to keep the group together more easily and when you are trying to reassemble your colleagues or clients after a day on the slopes, having a small selection of bars or apres-ski options helps!

  • Alpine charm

If you are looking for alpine charm for your corporate ski weekend or event, then an authentic smaller resort can offer a magical mountain experience for your event. The additional benefit is that you can often have whole slopes to yourselves, avoid lift queues and busy mountain restaurants.

  • Budget

If you are organising your corporate ski weekend on a budget, then choosing a less famous resort can also help keep your budget in control. Quite often the cost of accommodation, lift passes, and meals can be lower in some of the lesser-known resorts.

  • Unique accommodation

Many smaller resorts can offer hidden gems with high levels of service and offer better value for money. Accommodation and in-resort suppliers tend to work that little bit harder to attract clients in lesser-known resorts, which can work in your favour when we are helping you find bespoke accommodation for a memorable event.

  • Small resort in a big ski area

If your group has many experienced skiers and you would prefer to be based in one of the expansive ski areas, there is often the chance to stay in a small resort which has links into a ski area which has hundreds of runs and modern lifts.

Corporate Ski Specialists have run numerous ski weekends and corporate events in smaller ski resorts. Here are our highlights:

  • Baqueira Beret, Spain – Your 3* hotel budget can stretch to a 4* hotel with a spa in Baqueira Beret. The ski lifts are easily accessed and modern, plus weekend flights to Toulouse are more reasonable compared to Geneva or Lyon
  • Alpendorf, Austria – This small Austrian resort offers traditional charm, superb restaurants, ski convenience and is linked to the Ski Amadé area, offering 760km of slopes for all levels of skiers
  • Engelberg, Switzerland – This compact Swiss resort just a short transfer from Zurich offers affordable accommodation, good nightlife for its size and is famed for its off piste skiing as well as a range of pistes for all other levels
  • Sierra Nevada, Spain – Sierra Nevada offers high altitude skiing, free tapas at après-ski time and breath-taking views of the Rif Mountains. A unique experience we would highly recommend
  • La Clusaz, France – One of the smaller French resorts, La Clusaz offers great skiing with a village feel. There are a range of hotels to choose from, including 5*options which are more affordable than the bigger, more well-known resorts
